    Making Green River A Hate-Free Zone

    The result of the 2016 election has created turmoil on the usually peaceful Green River (GR) campus. In order to restore some peace and hope, interim President, Scott Morgan, sent out an email on November 18. The email promised that the college will always “stand by its core values and principles” and think for the betterment of the students. Within very short notice, the college staff, faculty, and students conducted an event on November 22 for the people of the GR community to come together and voice their concerns.     Men’s Basketball Team Approaches Pre-season

    “Deon Sanders said it best,” said sophomore player, Cole Luckett. “If you look good, you feel good, if you feel good, you play good, they play good.” With basketball, there is a reaction to every movement. Sometimes, the slightest movement at any given time can alter a play. You could be dribbling across the court at one point and lose the ball in another. This year, the team consists of four sophomore players and eight incoming freshmen players.     Hold That Pose: Art Modelling for Figure Drawing

    When figure drawing, an artist depends on movement for their drawing to take shape; the opposite is often true for their subjects.  In Green River College’s Salish Hall, the intermediate and beginning drawing classes take to a silent focus, aside from the scribbling of pencils and new age music emitting from a boom box.     Artist Portfolio Student Exhibit

    The Artist’s Portfolio student exhibit comes to a close this week, holding its closing ceremony this Thursday, December 1, in the Helen S. Smith Gallery. The exhibit is the final project for ART180, a capstone class for students pursuing degrees in art or, in some cases, careers as an artist, art tech, art teacher, or simply chasing the passion.  As part of the class, students assemble portfolios, websites, and eventually the design of the Artist’s Portfolio exhibit.     National Coming Out Week at Green River

    As the wild Washington weather cancelled afternoon classes for a lot of students, attendance was remarkably high for last Friday’s Green River College Drag show commencing the end of the second annual National Coming Out week.    Through out the second week of Fall Quarter, Green River College’s Student life implemented five events for each day of the week.  On Monday, students were asked to click the like button on the Student Life Facebook page resulting in a free t-shirt giveaway.  On Tuesday, over 300 cupcakes were distributed to students as well as with a large Halloween candy bowl with…

    For the past 50 years, The Current has been serving Green River College as a trusted news provider. The academic year 2016-17 brings a hope for stability after many key changes took place in the college administration.     GRC Foundation: Scholarship Student Welcome Reception

    The GRC Foundation hosted a reception to honor its scholarship winners for academic year 2016-17. On September 29, scholarship recipients gathered in the River Room of Student Union building. It was a casual open-house style event with refreshments available for all attendees. Along with the students, the College and Foundation staff and the selection committee were present at the event. The scholarship was divided into several categories: General, need based, program based, single parent, veterans, and merit based. The awards ranged from $300 to $3,000 per student, with the total budget of $527,000. This amount was divided between 248 recipients. Among…

    October Artist Spotlight

    The Fine Arts Faculty has elected Ao Hu, a 20 year old photography major, as the Artist Spotlight for the month of October. Ao Hu was raised in China and moved to Washington in the fall of 2013 to attend Green River College. He lives on campus in the Campus Corner Apartments and is hoping to transfer to another university to continue his education at schools like the School of Visual Arts in New York, or the California College of The Arts.     New ASGRC Formed

    The ASGRC is being led by a new president, Patricia Argie, 17, who is an international student. She has been on the public relations committee and judicial board for a month. She is partnered with Harjot Singh, 17, who is the vice president. He is a domestic student and was on the finance committee last year. They want to make Green River College a place where people communicate more. Argie said such a lack of communication was reflected in the Q5 movement last year. Having more communication among faculty, administration, and students would have made the problem a lot smaller, she said.…
