By Isaac Donnelly Wizards of the Coast is a Renton-based multimedia entertainment publisher, and two of its most popular games are Dungeons and Dragons, and Magic the Gathering. The purpose of this story is to introduce you to WotC (the shortening of Wizards of the Coast) and, specifically, what its impact is on culture in Washington. I have been personally interested in this company and its impact ever since I was young, looking at my dad’s old Magic the Gathering card binder and examining the art, reading the masterful flavor text on the bottom of each card. These formative experiences…

By Tony Nguyen AUBURN, Wash. — Green River College is hit with daily phishing emails from anyone ranging from students to staff/faculty to college President Dr. Suzanne Johnson. The new email service for the college has been in the works for the past few years. Phishing (not to be confused with fishing) is a common social engineering tactic mostly associated with emails. Camella Morgan, the CIO (Chief Information Officer)/Executive Director of IT at the college, recommends three things the community should do to protect itself against phishing: 1) Learn how to recognize a phishing email; 2) Never click on a…

By Alexander Hiner James Webb Telescope’s (JWST) expected lifespan doubled after a successful launch and two mid-course corrections. That’s the message from the December 29 NASA blog. NASA’s goal prior to launch was to get at least five years of science operations from the telescope. They now believe it will be operational for significantly longer than 10 years. With a mirror diameter of about 21.3 feet, JWST has a surface area six times larger than its predecessor Hubble. It’s designed with Infra-red (IR) technology, a low frequency heat radiation, to see beyond gas and dust clouds in space. Beyond anything…

By Alyssa Baker Starting a new quarter of college classes in a new year is difficult enough, but doing so with COVID-19, which I did, is much worse. On December 27, I woke up with a sore throat, body aches, headache and fever which occurred just after I returned home from a vacation with friends. Without even getting tested, I immediately started a 10-day quarantine. Due to the massive surge of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus, I found that all drive-through COVID testing sites were completely booked and rapid test kits were sold out everywhere. Finally, I found…

The Mysterious Trebuchet Back in the Middle Ages, trebuchets were used in wars and sieges to throw stones at castles and walled cities, trying to break them down. They were also used to throw things, like manure and animal corpses, over the walls of cities. But why in the world is there a trebuchet tucked in one of the hiking trails adjacent to GRC? Was it built as a physics project by students on campus? How long has it been there? Like all good mysteries, these questions may not have answers. But in case you happen to stumble upon it…

Recently a new show known as Santa inc. has been released to the public. The show features talent such as Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman. However, the show has been drowning in negative reviews and disapproval. The only question is why audiences seem to dislike the show in such overwhelming numbers? According to Rogen from his personal Twitter account, the hate is coming from review bombing white supremacists. Rogen stated, “We really pissed off tens of thousands of white supremacists…” However, despite how confident Rogen is, the numbers aren’t exactly on his side. Considering the over one-hundred thousand dislikes on…

On Feb. 25, The Research Institute for Publications announced that the estimated sales of comics in Japan in 2020 were up 23 percent to $613 billion. After the record of $586 billion set in 1995, they had been declining due to the reducing sales of comic magazines for 24 years in a row. Yet, introducing digital comics to the market helped break the record for the first time. Particularly, action-battle comics are one of the most popular genres. Oricon News reported that the top five best-seller comics in 2020 were action-battle comics, like Demon Slayer, Kingdom and ONE PIECE. This…

Marvel recently announced that the character of Blade will be introduced into the MCU in his own feature film sometime in 2023. Blade is a daywalker which is a variation on a vampire and his inclusion means a lot for the MCU. Until recently, Blade was owned by Fox but Disney negotiated for the rights to the character when buying out Fox Entertainment which explains the lack of the characters inclusion until now. Disney has been slowly incorporating the Fox properties into the MCU ever since the purchase and while it’s clear that Blade is not necessarily their top priority,…
