Rittenhouse Shown to be Innocent by Jury

The trial of Kyle Rittenhouse wrapped up at the end of last week. This trial was possibly the most high-profile trial since that of OJ Simpson and by some is considered to be just as infamous. The trial was deciding over whether Kyle Rittenhouse, who at the time of the incident was 17, was practicing self-defense when he fatally injured two rioters and severely injured another during a riot in Kenosha Wisconsin over the shooting that paralyzed Jacob Blake. After the trial went on for more than two weeks, the jury entered deliberation and returned just over 24 hours later…

Soon after on November 2, CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) director Rochelle Walensky made eligible the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5-11. Out of roughly 47 million COVID-19 cases in the US, children make up for nearly 6.6 million cases. Since its approval, almost 2.6 million children have received the first dose of the vaccination. Children ages 5 to 11 are now eligible for vaccinations that will be provided in significantly lower dosages, two injections given with a three-week period in between. by Shemar Young  Some three hundred college scholarships worth more than a half-million dollars are available for Green River students. Applications need to be turned into the GRC Foundation between January and April 2022. If students applied for scholarships this fall, they cannot apply for the 2022 scholarships. Heather Hughbanks, a development specialist at GRC, said program-specific scholarships are among those available. She cited the $500 Esther Latter Nursing scholarship for nursing students as an example. Hughbanks said, “Typically, the money awarded in this program is $2,000 per scholarship divided over three quarters”.  George Frasier, vice president of college advancement,…

    Yet The Shortage Continues

At the end of August, the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics reported a decline to 10.4 million in job openings, hires hanging at 6.3 million, and a 2.9 percent quit rate. What started as an inconvenience due to the pandemic seems to unravel more deeply as the labour shortage continues to disadvantage economies across the world. Economists discuss varying factors that seem to forward this lag, from ageing employees retiring, to unsatisfied demands for sufficient wages and bettered workplace environments. Although, there is yet a definite cause behind the shortage’s continuation, speculations also include financial savings reducing the urgency to…

Mental Health During The Pandemic. Tatiana Marshall

In April 2020, data from the United Nations showed a tripled increase in the levels of depressive symptoms since the previous year. It is no surprise how greatly the pandemic has impacted mental health, especially that of students. “Students talk about feeling sad or depressed due to their isolation,” states Devon Klein, a counselor in her 13th year working at the college. Matthew Cullen, who has been a Green River counselor for three years, offers a similar perspective, discussing how “loneliness has been a big issue during the pandemic.” Cullen urges students to “call or email the counselors… On Green…

Readership is Up for Action-Battle Comics in Japan.

On Feb. 25, The Research Institute for Publications announced that the estimated sales of comics in Japan in 2020 were up 23 percent to $613 billion. After the record of $586 billion set in 1995, they had been declining due to the reducing sales of comic magazines for 24 years in a row. Yet, introducing digital comics to the market helped break the record for the first time. Particularly, action-battle comics are one of the most popular genres. Oricon News reported that the top five best-seller comics in 2020 were action-battle comics, like Demon Slayer, Kingdom and ONE PIECE. This…

    GRC Athletics and Vaccines

In March 2020, Green River College students were not able to play sports, but with the world opening back up again, this is how the college’s sports are opening back up for a safe season. Sports were not played at all in fall 2020. Instead, the college moved the sports season to the spring of 2021, and only three of our eight sports participated in said season. Those sports were baseball, track and field, and cross country. There are many differences between the sports season of spring 2021 and the season of fall 2021. Shannon Percell, the athletic director at…

    Seahawks Update

By Corbin Ferguson The Seahawks are third in their division through week five. With a losing record of 2-3, they are two games behind the second place Los Angeles Rams, and three games behind the division leading Arizona Cardinals. The Rams are one game ahead of Seattle at 4-1 and the undefeated Cardinals are sitting comfortably in first place. Based on how these other two teams have been playing, the chances of the Seahawks winning the NFC West seem slim. According to NFL.com, Russell Wilson is now ranked 24th, with a total of 1,196 passing yards. Fellow NFC West quarterbacks,…
