    Victor Melendez at his artist talk on May 8, explained his journey with graphic design. Before coming to the United States, Melendez lived in Mexico City where he learned most of his English through American TV shows. After relocating he had to work very hard and do several jobs to attend college. But, despite all that Melendez succeeded.     FISH Club Fundraises for Water Crisis in Africa

    Green River’s very own Focus, Inspiration, Share, and Hook (FISH) club partnered with World Vision and Krispy Kreme to start a fundraiser for communities around the world who are in need of clean water. Specifically, children and individuals in Tanzania, Africa. Every year, the FISH club donates money to an orphanage in Tanzania. This year, FISH sold Krispy Kreme Donuts for their annual fundraiser. Krispy Kreme has been an advocate for fundraisers and has raised money for important causes since 1995.     With colleges increasing their tuition prices, employed Green River College students are grateful to have a source of income. The cost of higher education has never been more expensive. Adjusting for inflation, a 2017 study by College Board found that tuition for public four-year institutions has increased by 213 percent over the last 30 years.     Students Combat Hate Speech on Campus

    Green River students and administration collaborate to deal with Anthony Parish and speakers like him in the future. In response to the May 15 free speech forum, students of Green River are coming up with new ways to combat speakers like Parish. Several clubs have started working on solutions to combat hate speech speakers. The Muslim Students’ Association (MSA) and the Black Students’ Association (BSA) have started collaborating alongside Green River administration to try and solve the issues surrounding Parish.     Heavier Than Air Productions is presenting the critically acclaimed musical “Oklahoma!” Taking place in the early 1900s, the musical, made by well-known composer Richard Rogers and dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II, was brought to Broadway in 1943. Based on the play “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs, an American playwright, screenwriter and author, the musical takes place in the Oklahoma territory.          The Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC) is a pledge to the chemistry department to incorporate the 12 green chemistry principles in chemistry courses.  This commitment has two components: “greening” the labs and preparing the students for chemistry in a world that is increasingly focused on sustainability and safety.
