Let’s face it, Green River College, could definitely use a few changes. I mean, we all have that one thing we wish the school would do differently. That said, it is unclear where we are supposed to voice our questions and concerns. It was for these reasons that we The Current, collaborated with The Associated Students of Green River College (ASGRC) to create a special event called “Visions of the College” which was held on May 11th in the Student Union.

At the event, students were given the opportunity to speak with our special guests Interim President, George Frasier and Vice President of Instruction, Jamie Fitzgerald. To sweeten the deal, we offered free pizza and a variety of drinks to all who participated.
To take part in the event, students were asked to write down their answers to one of two possible questions, “What has been the highlight of your college experience at Green River College?” or “What would you change for future Green River College students?”. Once finished, students were instructed to present their answers to either Fraiser or Fitzgerald, and then they were given a free slice of pizza and a drink of their choice.
Being the mindful journalist I am, I was curious about what the students had to say about the event. So, I decided to go and bother a few students with a slice of pizza in their hands and asked for their thoughts. Many students mentioned that they had no idea who the president of our school was and said that the event introduced them to our leaders. But of course, others said they were just happy with the free pizza.
Did we bribe students into making a change? Well, yes. However, I took it upon myself to observe the conversations both Fraiser and Fitzgerald were having with the students, and what I saw was heartening.
While yes, most of the students initially came for the free pizza and drinks; when they were talking to Fraiser and Fitzgerald about the school, I saw passion ignite. These students had things to say and were just waiting for somebody to hear them.
Ultimately, the event was a major success. We had 183 people attend and wiped out 22 boxes of pizza. Everybody who participated left with a smile on their faces, and a better understanding of who is running our college. Visions of the College created the conditions for students to use their voices. As a student-run news publication, that is what The Current is all about. We are proud of what we accomplished that morning and are excited to bring even more events to the college in the very near future.
